TW at Christie’s Lates: A Historical Moment of Migration and Memory

Updated: Oct 1

On the 27th of September 2024, TW had the distinct honour of exhibiting at the prestigious Christie’s in London, in collaboration with Jendaya, ahead of Black History Month. The theme of the event, Migration and Memory, brought together a select group of exceptional African artists from the diaspora, including our own founder, Toyosi Olowe, who selected the TW piece—Jolly Good Friends. This iconic 1-of-1 artwork from the TW collection became a striking centrepiece, the event attracted long queues that spilled onto the high road, with eager attendees crowding to witness this remarkable moment in contemporary art history.

Jolly Good Friends: More than Art, a Shared Journey

Jolly Good Friends, a masterful painting chosen by Toyosi Olowe from the TW Collection, the art piece transcends its canvas to tell a powerful narrative about friendship, resilience, and the shared experiences of migration. Set against the broader theme of Migration and Memory, the piece resonates deeply with the histories and stories it seeks to embody.

Through its vivid colours and flowing, expressive lines, Jolly Good Friends captures the unspoken bond between two young girls, a symbol of the ties formed amidst journeys of migration and displacement. The innocence of the figures invites viewers to reflect on the importance of childhood memories and how those moments of connection shape who we are today. In the context of migration, this innocence speaks to the endurance and unity of communities bound together by shared histories.

For the many who attended the exhibition at Christie’s, Jolly Good Friends wasn’t just a piece of art—it was a statement. Displayed prominently through the grand windows of the gallery, it stood as a beacon, drawing crowds from the high street, eager to immerse themselves in its powerful story.
