At TW (Toyo Writes), every piece of art we create carries a story, but some commissions hit deeper, calling us to connect directly with the roots of African history, resilience, and purpose.
Recently, a Nollywood actor approached us with a vision: to create a commissioned artwork honoring two of the most transcendent African icons of the 20th century, Thomas Sankara and Fela Kuti.
What unfolded was more than a creative project. It was a masterclass in building your own purpose with legacy firmly in mind.
The Power of Legacy & African Icons
Thomas Sankara, the radical revolutionary and former President of Burkina Faso, championed self-reliance, integrity, and anti-imperialism.

Fela Kuti, the pioneer of Afrobeat and uncompromising activist, used music as a weapon against oppression, corruption, and injustice.

Though they moved in different spheres; one in statecraft and revolution, the other in rhythm and rebellion, both men shared an unyielding love for Africa and an immortal refusal to bow to tyranny.
When you bring Sankara and Fela into a single visual space, you aren’t just creating a portrait of two men; you are capturing an atmosphere of pan-African pride.
Their lives remind us that legacy isn't built on accolades or applause; it is built on what you stand for when the world tries to quiet your voice.
Building Your Purpose with Legacy in Mind

When our African collector commissioned this piece, it wasn't simply to decorate a wall. As an artist who tells African stories on screen, he wanted a daily visual reminder of what it means to create with intention.
Surrounding yourself with icons like Sankara and Fela is an intentional act of alignment. It asks the question: What footprint am I leaving behind? How does my current work serve the future?
When we build our life's purpose with legacy in mind, our perspective shifts. We move away from short-term trends and focus on timeless impact. The art we choose to own becomes a mirror of our convictions and a beacon for where we are heading.
Why We Love Creating Meaningful Art at TW
When the final piece was unveiled, the reaction was pure emotion. The collector was deeply moved, expressing just how deeply the artwork resonated with his soul. Moments like that are precisely why we do what we do at TW.

For us, art is not passive decoration; it is a vehicle for legacy, identity, and truth.
We love creating custom commissions because they allow us to bridge the gap between historical heritage and contemporary life. Culturally rich stories make for the absolute best art because they carry weight.
They evoke feeling, spark conversation, and ground us in who we are. When a piece carries the spirit of figures who shifted the course of African history, it ceases to be just canvas and paint; it becomes a living legacy.
